This is a web monitor for the Transbay Tubes sound sculpture. When a BART train enters the underwater Transbay Tube connecting San Francisco and Oakland, this sculpture emits light to indicate the train's line color (Red, Yellow, Green, or Blue), and sound (by heating one of the sculpture's 3 tubes).
about the transbay tube...

The Transbay Tube is an underwater rail tunnel carrying BART's four transbay lines (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue) under San Francisco Bay between Oakland and San Francisco. It is 3.6 miles long, with a maximum depth of 135 feet below sea level. The two nearest stations are Embarcadero in San Francisco and West Oakland in Oakland — the rail section between them is 6 miles in length.

Opened in 1974, the tube was the final segment of the original BART system. During peak hours, over 28,000 passengers per hour pass through, with headways as short as 2.5 minutes. Trains reach their highest speeds here — up to 80 mph, though typically 70 mph. Current capacity improvement projects aim to reduce headways to 2 minutes, or 30 trains per hour in each direction.
wow, what a cool tube!
